Preparing for coloring: how to get the perfect color and maintain hair quality

Booking an appointment with a colorist always comes with the excitement of change. However, the result of your coloring depends not only on the stylist’s skill and the quality of the dye but also on the initial condition of your hair. Proper preparation helps the pigment lay more evenly and the color last longer. The experts at Melenas have prepared a checklist to help you achieve the perfect result.

Should you wash your hair before your visit?

This is one of the most common questions. The answer depends on the technique the stylist will use:

  • For full lightening (Total Blonde): It is recommended not to wash your hair for 1–2 days. Natural scalp sebum acts as a protective barrier, reducing the risk of irritation.
  • For complex techniques (AirTouch, Balayage): Hair should be clean and dry. The stylist needs to see the natural flow of the strands to correctly separate them with a hair dryer or brush.
  • Important: If you use root touch-up sprays or dry shampoo, they must be washed off before coming to the salon, as they can cause “spots” during the coloring process.

Intensive hydration a week before your appointment

The more porous and dry the hair is, the faster the new color will fade. We recommend focusing on home hydration 7–10 days before your visit. Use high-quality masks to nourish the structure.

What NOT to do: Stop using oils and masks with heavy silicones 3 days before your coloring. They create a dense film that can prevent the dye from penetrating evenly.

Honesty is the key to success

During your preliminary consultation at Melenas, be sure to tell the stylist your hair’s history over the last two years. It is vital for us to know:

  • If you have used henna or basma (even if it was a year ago).
  • If you have had keratin straightening or a perm.
  • If you have used any box dyes from a supermarket at home.

This information helps us choose the correct developer strength and avoid unpredictable chemical reactions.

Comfort and timing

Complex coloring is a meticulous process that can take anywhere from 3 to 6 hours. Our advice:

  • Avoid planning important meetings immediately after your visit.
  • Bring a good mood (and we will provide the delicious coffee).
  • Show the stylist references (photos) of what you like and — equally important — what you definitely do not like.
